Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, but as a busy mom, preparation is key to keeping your home safe and stress-free. Here are a few ideas to help you create a puppy-proof environment while balancing your packed schedule

Why Puppy Proofing is Essential

Puppies are curious and can easily get into trouble. Protecting them (and your belongings) ensures their safety and helps you maintain peace of mind. Puppy-proofing also sets the stage for effective training.

Step 1: Secure Hazardous Areas

Block off spaces like the kitchen, bathroom, or stairs using baby gates. Store cleaning products, medications, and small objects out of reach. Keep wires tucked away to prevent chewing accidents.

Step 2: Choose a Puppy-Safe Zone

Set up a dedicated area for your puppy with a crate, bed, and toys. This space will serve as their haven during rest times. I like Puppy X-pens that can be connected to crates to give young puppies a safe space to spend time when they are unsupervised.

Step 3: Protect Valuables

Move shoes, bags, and electronics out of reach. Puppies love to chew, so offer alternatives like chew toys or bones to satisfy their instincts. I can’t even count how many sippy cups, barbies, flip flops, high-heels or toys we’ve said good-bye to because we didn’t think to move them out of the way. (or my kids simply forgot about it and the dog didn’t)

Step 4: Remove Potential Hazards

Inspect your yard for toxic plants, sharp objects, or gaps in fencing. Indoors, secure loose rugs and remove breakable decorations.

Step 5: Prepare Your Family

Involve your children in puppy-proofing. Teach them how to handle the puppy gently and avoid leaving small toys or food within the puppy’s reach.

Step 6: Stock Up on Supplies
