Grooming Essentials: Keeping Your Goldendoodle’s Coat Healthy

Okay, friend. Let’s talk Goldendoodle grooming — because I know you love that fluffy, teddy-bear look as much as I do… but wow, that coat takes some work, right?

Let me tell you what I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way!) from years of raising Doodles: a solid at-home grooming routine is everything. Brushing, trimming, and bathing on a regular basis not only keeps your pup looking like a million bucks—it also keeps them comfy, clean, and mat-free.

Why Brushing Matters (More Than You Think)

If I could only give one piece of grooming advice, it would be this: brush your Goldendoodle often. Like, daily or 4 times a week—minimum. Their wavy or curly coats are stunning, but those same curls can turn into a matted mess before you know it.

And mats aren’t just a cosmetic issue. They can be super painful for your dog, especially behind the ears, under the collar, and around the legs. I’ve seen mild matting turn into full-on pelted coats that had to be shaved down to the skin. Not fun for anyone.

I use a Slicker Brush and Metal Comb — they’re my go-to brush and comb that actually gets down to the undercoat without hurting. Total game-changer.

Trimming: You Don’t Have to Be a Pro

I promise, you don’t need to be a professional groomer to do a little maintenance at home. Trimming around the eyes, paws, and sanitary areas helps your dog stay clean and comfortable between full grooming appointments.

I like to do a little touch-up every couple of weeks. Just five minutes here and there makes a huge difference (especially if your Doodle loves to run through the grass and end up with who-knows-what stuck in their fluff!).

Want to try it yourself? I use this set of Grooming Scissors for a quick paw and face trim. Super easy and beginner-friendly.

Bath Time Tips (and Why Timing Matters)

Bathing your Goldendoodle is important, but there’s a trick to it: don’t bathe if you haven’t brushed first. If you wash a matted coat, those mats tighten up like cement. Always brush before the bath, not after.

I aim for a bath every 3–4 weeks depending on how much dirt my pup decides to collect on hikes or playtime. Use a gentle, dog-safe shampoo (I love Mrs Meyer’s Dog Shampoo smells amazing and leaves their coat soft but not greasy).

And don’t forget to dry thoroughly, especially if your dog has a thicker coat. Damp spots can lead to skin irritation. A good blow dryer (not the one from your bathroom drawer, trust me) can help speed things up and fluff things out. I use a Dog Blow Dryer like this one and I swear it makes my dog look freshly groomed every time.

What Happens If You Skip It?

I get it—life gets busy. But if grooming falls too far down the list, here’s what can happen:

  • Matting that leads to painful skin irritation (and expensive vet or grooming bills)
  • Ear infections (Goldendoodles are prone to these, especially if hair grows in the ears)
  • Skin issues from trapped dirt, moisture, or even bugs (yep, it happens)
  • Less snuggling – when your Doodle is tangled or matted, the clean factor just isn’t there. You may notice that you’re petting your dog less and not snuggling with him as much. This is your sign to get going on bonding with the brush and combs or make that appointment with a professional groomer.

Final Thoughts from One Doodle Mom to Another

Regular grooming at home doesn’t have to be overwhelming—and it can actually be a sweet bonding time with your pup. Grab a brush, turn on a podcast, set up a lick mat for your buddy and make it part of your weekly rhythm. Your Goldendoodle (and your groomer!) will thank you.

If regular at home maintenance just isn’t happening, I suggest a shorter coat and more professional grooming more often to keep it short and keep those mats away.

I’ve linked all my favorite tools in my Amazon Storefront here so you can check them out. These are tried-and-true for me, and I only share what I actually use and love.

Got questions? Or a favorite brush I should try? Drop it in the comments—I love hearing from fellow Doodle parents!
